-
What is the best way to get to the trip start location?
-
Fly into Reykjavik International Airport (Keflavik Airport KEF). Depending on your arrival time, a guide may be available to meet you at the airport. If one is not available, you'll have clear instructions on how to reach the guesthouse/hostel accommodation for the first night via Flybus, and there will always be someone at the guesthouse/hostel to help you get settled in.
-
What are the accommodations like? Is there an option to upgrade accommodations?
-
The first and last nights in Reykjavik are in guesthouse/hostel accommodations close to the city center. These have shared dormitories, bathroom, and kitchen facilities. The remaining nights will be spent camping in different rustic campsites. These carefully selected, fabulous locations put you in the heart of Iceland’s wild landscapes. You'll be provided with state-of-the art 3-person tents, one per two people for maximum space and comfort, plus a spacious mess tent for communal moments and mealtimes. Altai also provides a camping mattress for each participant. Hot showers are normally available for a small fee. Electricity is not always available and you'll be charged a small fee.
If interested, upgraded accommodations are available for the two nights in Reykjavik (Day 1 and Day 7). Instead of a guesthouse/hostel, you would be staying in a 4-star hotel. Please contact our Adventures Team to explore pricing and availability.
-
Can solo travelers get their own room? Is there a single supplement fee?
-
Yes, solo travelers can have their own tent for the whole trip. Private hotel accommodation in Reykjavik is also possible, and prices will vary. Please contact our Adventures Team for pricing and availability.
-
How large is each travel group?
-
Group size ranges from 4 - 12 travelers.
-
What is the trekking like?
-
This trip is accessible to anyone in good health with a sense of adventure and a positive attitude. You'll walk around 4-6 hours a day and the hikes are not technically difficult but may include steep sections, glacial river crossings, and uneven terrain. Luggage, camping gear, and food transfers between campsites is included, so you'll only need a daypack during the trekking. This trip involves camping and please note that your help with tasks such as cooking is much appreciated and expected - everyone is part of the team!
-
Are meals included? What is the food like?
-
This trip includes all meals except for the evening meals in Reykjavik. Your guides take pride in the varied, fresh, and delicious food they provide on these camping trips. Meals are based on a selection of local products and you'll have the opportunity to try Icelandic delicacies such as skyr, smoked salmon, and leg of lamb.
Each day will start with a hearty breakfast accompanied by plenty of tea and coffee. The group will prepare and carry a picnic lunch for the day including an array of options - every day there will definitely be salad, sandwiches, fruit, and cakes among other options. Each three course evening meal includes meat, fish, and vegetables - fresh fruit and vegetables are offered every day.
Please let Altai Iceland know about any dietary requirements when you book the trip and they will work with you to cater to your needs.
-
How much extra money should people budget?
-
The currency in Iceland is Icelandic Krona (ISK). Exchange rates will vary. Please budget for:
- Meals in Reykjavik (2500-5600ISK)
- Showers and electricity use in campsites (around 500-600ISK per shower)
- Drinks, tips & personal expenses
- Tips - although the custom is not widespread in Iceland, if you are satisfied with the services of your guide, tipping is always appreciated. It is not obligatory and should be left to the discretion of each individual.
-
What should people bring? Do you have a packing list?
-
Altai Iceland provides a detailed packing list upon booking. Please follow this carefully and do not forget a warm sleeping bag or your sturdy hiking boots.
-
Are there additional activities that I can purchase? If so, what is the fee for each?

What are Altai Iceland's Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Policies?
-
As adventure and wilderness travel experts who run trips to some of the most remote parts of the world, Altai Iceland takes responsible tourism very seriously. They respect the ‘Leave No Trace’ outdoor ethical code and try to explore this beautiful location while causing minimal environmental damage.
The Leave No Trace policy can be summarized in seven simple steps which they hope you'll follow during your trip:
1. Be prepared
2. Stick to trails and camp overnight right
3. Stash your trash and pick up waste
4. Leave it as you find it
5. Be careful with fire
6. Respect wildlife
7. Be considerate of other visitors
Over the years they have built up good relations with their local suppliers and they are keen to support local businesses as much as possible. They are a small company and they pay their local partners and suppliers directly, ensuring fair rates.
Their small group sizes not only provide a more intimate adventure but also cause less impact on the environment and local communities. They expect all who travel with them to support and uphold their Sustainable Tourism philosophies.

For travel insurance, we recommend VisitorsCoverage.

We encourage you to also visit your home country's embassy website if you are traveling to a foreign country. Requirements can change rapidly. Please be sure you stay abreast of the requirements and restrictions for anywhere you plan to visit.
