-
Is my departure guaranteed?
-
Yes, all departures are guaranteed! However, please do not make any travel arrangements until you receive confirmation from Old Town Outfitters.
-
Are private departures available?
-
Yes, we have private departures available on this trip! Private departures offer more flexibility to travel when it suits your group. A private departure can be reserved with two or more people. Additional costs may apply and dates are subject to availability. Please contact our Adventures Team to explore pricing and check on availability.
-
What is the best way to get to the trip start location?
-
Fly into Guatemala City (GUA), where a tour representative will meet you for your transfer to Antigua. Upon exiting the airport, look for the driver holding a sign with your name on it.
-
What are the accommodations like?
-
Spend six nights in three-star hotel accommodations and one night tent camping. Stay in either El Carmen or San Jorge in Antigua, both long-standing hotels with beautiful patios and lush gardens, respectively, and both conveniently located only a few blocks from Central Park. Casa del Mundo is a boutique hotel built into the cliffside overlooking Lake Atitlan and its towering volcanoes.
Your campsite on Acatenango Volcano will have all the basic essentials (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad) as well as amazing views of its neighbor peak: the active Fuego Volcano. Enjoy a campfire at night with spectacular views of eruptions from Fuego.
-
Can solo travelers get their own room? Is there a single supplement fee?
-
Prices are based on double occupancy, though you can request your own room for a single supplement fee of $360. Please contact our Adventures Team to explore pricing and availability.
-
What meals are included?
-
Your trip cost includes all daily breakfasts, four lunches, and two dinners. Three of the lunches will be fresh picnic lunches during the tours. All of these will be vegetarian. The fourth lunch and first dinner will be at the restaurant in Casa del Mundo. The second dinner will be freshly prepared in camp on Acatenango.
-
How much extra money should people budget?
-
Plan to bring an extra $100 for meals that aren't included. Also plan to bring money for souvenirs and tips for guides.
-
What should I bring? Do you have a packing list? What considerations should I make for the weather?
-
You should plan to bring the following items:
• Hiking shoes AND water shoes/sandals
• Daypack with rain cover
• Clothing for hiking and kayaking
• Clothing for overnight in hotel
• Rain jacket (May thru October)
• Personal toiletries and/or medications
• Camera, hat, sunglasses & sunscreen
• 1L bottle for water (minimum)
• Flashlight
• Large-capacity backpack (40L+) with rain cover
• One warm layer and/or windbreaker
A note on the weather: Antigua and Lake Atitlan are both about a mile high in altitude. The days are sunny and warm with highs in the 70s and the nights tend to be in the 60s. Bring shorts and t-shirts for the days, but be sure to bring some warmer clothes for the nights. The campsite for the Acatenango trip tends to be in the 40s at night. Appropriate clothing for near-freezing temperatures and rain is absolutely indispensable. Old Town Outfitters also recommends that you bring gloves, a buff or scarf, and a wool hat.
-
Are porters available during the hikes?
-
The hike on Day 3 is short and only requires a daypack. The hike on Day 6 includes camping overnight and is backpacking style, meaning you'll be carrying your camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, pad) in and out. If you prefer to hike with only a daypack for your personal items, local porters are available to hire. If you are interested in this option, please contact our Adventures Team to arrange.
-
Should I purchase travel insurance? If so, do you have a recommended provider?
-
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, and/or theft or accidental damage while traveling. For travel insurance, we recommend VisitorsCoverage.
-
Are there special requirements for entry into the destination I am visiting?
-
We recommend you visit the local government websites where you plan to travel and review the required documentation for entry, current restrictions, and general recommendations for travel within the area. We encourage you to also visit your home country's embassy website if you are traveling to a foreign country. Requirements can change rapidly. Please be sure you stay abreast of the requirements and restrictions for anywhere you plan to visit. You can also enroll in the U.S. government’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and you will be sent updates if the situation in your destination changes. You can find the program link at https://step.state.gov/.
